Ptolemaeus Region on the Moon

October 21, 2004

Ptolemaeus, Alphonsus, and Arzachel Area in the middle part of the moon.

Crater at top in the middle is 158 km x 158 km Ptolemaeus with Alphonsus just below it and Arzachel just below that. Lots of other interesting craters in this image including Hershel just above Ptolemaeus and Thebit below and to the left of Arzachel. Walled plains of Hipparchus in upper left and Deslandres at bottom on terminator. Note also the 300 m scarp (linear fault) knows as Rupes Recta on terminator to the left of Arzachel. The crater next to this is 17 km x 17 km crater Birt.

Images taken with TEC-140 using 5x Televue Powermate Telescope mounted on Losmandy G11 mount. Camera used was a Canon EOS20D used at prime focus with Powermate and Diagonal.

Three 1/200 sec exposures aligned and stacked with Photoshop CS
