Schiller Crater on the Moon

January 22, 2005

The crater Schiller

A 175 km x 70 km crater in the south west quadrant of the moon that was likely caused by an oblique meteor collision or the merging of two craters. The crater on the edge of Schiller is the 49 km x 49 km crater Bayer.

Images taken with TEC-140 Telescope mounted on Losmandy G11 mount. Camera used was a Canon EOS20D. The image was taken using a 5x Powermate and eyepiece projection with a 13.8 mm SWA Plossl.

Five 25 second exposures aligned and stacked using ImagesPlus 2.50 beta and sharpened and dust and scratch filtered in Photoshop CS Note, ImagesPlus 2.10A was used for focus.

Due to the long apparent focal length of the imaging chain used here (~f/200), focusing was difficult. The camera also had some dust on the imaging sensor and removal of this also softened the image.
